Case Studies

The Same Hands. Three Different Instruments.

Upright piano in a sunlit church nave, wood pews visible in background

The Situation

Pastor Williams contacted us in March: their 1948 Steinway S had drifted nearly 40 cents flat over two pandemic years of disuse. The congregation's choir director, Margaret Chen, had been transposing hymns down a half-step to compensate.

The Resolution

A full pitch-raise followed by precision tuning across all 230 strings. A4 now holds at 440.0 Hz through Sunday services and Wednesday rehearsals. Margaret no longer transposes.

"I didn't realize how much tension a flat piano puts on a choir until the moment it was gone. The congregation actually sang louder the next Sunday."

Margaret Chen, Music Director — First Congregational Church, Boston

Grand piano on a concert stage under warm spotlights, lid raised

The Situation

The venue manager called at 9 AM: the CF6 had been used for a jazz recording session the night before and the hammers were voiced bright for close-mic pickup. The evening's classical recital needed warmth back in the midrange.

The Resolution

Three hours of needle voicing, regulation of the letoff point on the upper octaves, and a final tuning pass after the hall reached performance temperature. The soloist, David Park, played the first movement of the Brahms B-flat without stopping.

"He arrived with a tuning lever and left with a concert instrument. The difference in the first chord was audible from the back row."

James Okafor, Technical Director — Berklee Performance Center

The Situation

Elena Vasquez inherited her grandmother's 1927 Mason & Hamlin Model A. The pin-block had developed hairline cracks, 14 bass strings had false beats from mineral deposits, and the action had never been regulated since a 1960s repair replaced the hammers with mismatched felt.

The Resolution

Complete restringing of the bass and tenor sections. A new Delignit pin-block. All 88 hammers reshaped and voiced to match the original shank geometry. Six weeks of work. Elena played Chopin's Ballade No. 1 at her own recital on the instrument her grandmother had learned on.

"I grew up hearing that piano as a broken thing. Now it sounds like it's been waiting — like it always knew what it was supposed to be."

Elena Vasquez, Boston Conservatory — recital, December 2025
